Monica Cristini’s La MaMa Experimental Theatre – A Lasting Bridge Between Cultures offers a clear and well-documented history of La MaMa’s central role in shaping the Off-Off-Broadway scene and its international connections between 1961 and 1975. Drawing on extensive archival research, Cristini shows how Ellen Stewart fostered creative exchange between American and European artists through touring, training, and collaborative workshops. The book highlights the contributions of groups such as the Open Theater, the La MaMa Repertory Troupe, the Great Jones Repertory Company, the Native American Theater Ensemble, and the Jarboro Players. While the final chapters touch on issues related to cultural appropriation and global artistic exchange, they point to questions that could be explored further. Overall, the study reframes the avant-garde as a transnational network rather than a set of isolated experiments.
