Myron M. Beasley

Myron M. Beasley, Ph.D. is Associate Professor in the areas of Cultural Studies, African American Studies, and Women and Gender Studies at Bates College, USA. His ethnographic research includes exploring the intersection of cultural politics and art and social change, as he believes in the power of artists and recognize them as cultural workers. He has conducted fieldwork in Morocco, Brazil, the US and currently in Haiti. His first major ethnography explores the intersections of Race and Sexuality among the Men of Adodi a "same gender loving" community of men of African Descent. The Andy Warhol Foundation, the Whiting Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities and most recently the Reed Foundation (The Ruth Landes Award), have awarded him fellowships and grants, for his ethnographic writing about art and cultural engagement. He has also been recognized for his teaching (awarded teaching awards) and work in the area of pedagogy from the International Communication Association, Ohio University, and Brown University. His writing has appeared in many academic journals including The Journal of Poverty (which he served as guest editor for a special issue on the topic of Art and Social Policy), Text and Performance Quarterly, Museum & Social Issues, The Journal of Curatorial Studies, Gastronomica, ELSE and Performance Research. He is also an international curator.

Dr Myron M. Beasley est Maître de Conférences à Bates Collège, aux Etats-Unis, où il est spécialisé dans les domaines des études culturelles, des études africaines américaines et des études sur le genre et la sexualité. Dans une perspective ethnographique, ses recherches sont au croisement des politiques culturelles, de l’art et de la transformation sociale et s’intéressent plus particulièrement aux artistes et à leur agentivité sur le plan culturel. Ses études de terrain l’ont conduit dans différents pays tels que le Maroc, le Brésil, les Etats-Unis et Haiti aujourd’hui. Sa première recherche ethnographique d’ampleur avait pour sujet la communauté masculine et d’origine africaine d’Adodi (« Men of Adodi »), des hommes aimant d’autres hommes, à propos desquels  Myron M. Beasley a étudié ce qu’ils pouvaient dire et révéler du croisement entre race et sexualité. Régulièrement distingué pour son travail ethnographique sur l’art et l’engagement culturel, Myron M. Beasley est le récipiendaire de plusieurs prix, bourses de recherches et subventions de notamment la Fondation Andy Warhol, la Fondation Whiting, le National Endowment for the Humanities et, plus récemment, le Prix Ruth Landes (Fondation Reed). Il a également été récompensé pour son investissement pédagogique. Il a été publié dans plusieurs revues universitaires de renom parmi lesquelles The Journal of Poverty (dont il a dirigé un des numéros consacré à l’art et aux politiques sociales), Text and Performance Quarterly, Museum & Social Issues, The Journal of Curatorial Studies, Gastronomica, ELSE and Performance Research. Myron M. Beasley a également été le commissaire de nombreuses expositions internationales.
